• Anthropic's Q1 2026 saga: $30B funding, SaaSpocalypse market crash, 150+ product launches, DoD standoff, Claude Code $2.5B ARR, and $30B revenue milestone...
Best for builders who want practical takeaways. 9 min read.
In Q1 (ish) 2026, Anthropic raised $30B, triggered a SaaSpocalypse sell-off (wiping $285B from software stocks in a single session), fought the Pentagon, shipped 150+ products + features.. & grew ARR from $9B to $30B in the process.
I asked Claude to document all of it. Here's the full account.
(PS - after you're done reading, did it miss anything? is “it” the right pronoun?)

🗓️ ENTERING 2026 — THE BASELINE
Revenue: It had been less than three years since Anthropic earned its first dollar in revenue. Anthropic hit $9B in annualized revenue at the end of 2025, up from $1B at end of 2024 — 10x growth for three consecutive years.
Claude Code entering the year: Claude Code was made available to the general public in May 2025. By the start of 2026, it had hit $1B+ in run-rate revenue — faster than ChatGPT, faster than any enterprise software product in history.
Customers: Two years ago, a dozen customers spent over $1M with Anthropic annually. Entering 2026, that number exceeded 500. Eight of the Fortune 10 are now Claude customers.
🗓️ JANUARY 2026
Jan — Anthropic Labs division launches Anthropic introduced a division called “Labs,” with Mike Krieger (formerly Chief Product Officer) joining it.
Jan 12 — Claude Cowork launches Anthropic launched Claude Cowork as a desktop tool for non-coders — users could draft documents, analyze spreadsheets, and organize files. In January alone, Anthropic launched more than thirty products and features.
Jan 30 — Cowork plugins drop on GitHub (the fuse is lit) Anthropic released a collection of open-source Claude plugins to GitHub — simple files in Markdown and JSON, no launch event, no marketing blitz — covering contract review, compliance checks, sales prep, legal intake, and internal research.
User growth by end of January: The number of weekly active Claude Code users doubled since January 1. Business subscriptions to Claude Code quadrupled since the start of 2026, and enterprise use grew to represent over half of all Claude Code revenue. A recent analysis estimated that 4% of all GitHub public commits worldwide were being authored by Claude Code — double the percentage from just one month prior.

The selloff hit on February 3–4, as investors concluded that AI had evolved from productivity enhancement to existential threat for the software industry. The damage by company:
Thomson Reuters lost $8.2 billion in a single day — its steepest drop ever. Infosys fell 8%, TCS 6%, and the Nifty IT index shed ₹1.9 lakh crore, dropping below ₹30 lakh crore for the first time in months.
The Nasdaq 100 dropped 2.4% before recovering to close 1.6% down. Financial services stocks tumbled 7%.
The Nifty IT index posted its worst month since October 2008, down 15% in January alone.

Each ad depicted AI assistants suddenly pivoting to promoting a fictional product in the middle of a conversation. Also participating: Accel, General Catalyst, Jane Street, Qatar Investment Authority, Microsoft, and Nvidia.

Feb 25 — Cowork Scheduled Tasks + Vercept acquisition Scheduled tasks launched, letting users run recurring or on-demand tasks from within Cowork. On the same day, Anthropic acquired Vercept to advance Claude's computer use capabilities.
Feb 26–27 — Department of War standoff Anthropic refused the U.S. Department of Defense's demand to remove contractual restrictions prohibiting use of its AI for domestic surveillance and fully autonomous weapons.
