The typical, but alarming response to AI hallucinations nowadays is 'Aren't modern LLMs good at not hallucinating citations?' I don't think people realize that they're saying the modern LLMs are good at doing fraud for people. If *you* didn't read it, it's fraud to cite it!
Completely made-up citations in scientific works indicate their authors did fraud: A hallucinated citation means you're standing by the claim that you read something that doesn't exist and that you relayed its contents accurately.
