ALTMAN: "We have been talking a lot about the need to pace progress to ensure safety; for me this is the strongest evidence yet of the urgency." What could OpenAI do as a result of this urgency? Some ideas in this thread. Everyone at OpenAI should read this thread! 👇
"We have been talking a lot about the need to pace progress to ensure safety; for me this is the strongest evidence yet of the urgency." What will OpenAI do concretely as a result of this urgency? Some very tractable ideas: OpenAI could bring in a third party to verify additional details about their prior two week pause to increase confidence in future pacing efforts. Or place their upcoming additional commitments about incident reporting and safety practices into OpenAI's binding frontier safety framework, instead of just making them purely voluntary (which would also encourage other companies to do the same). Or endorse concrete redlines around future degradations of monitorability (these could also be made binding by putting them in OpenAI's frontier safety framework, and could be verified by third parties). Or disclose additional information about where compute is being allocated internally. Or support current legislation in Massachusetts that would mandate more substantive third party auditing on frontier safety risks that would actually come into effect in 2027. Or do another joint alignment evaluation exercise (like the one OpenAI previously did with Anthropic in 2025). Feeling the urgency is good! Time to act accordingly.
