This is representative of a broad category of something we'll see as a "transition" step as AI diffuses. Many processes (companies) will be overwhelmed by essentially denial-of-service attacks by generated material or automated queries. There will be no choice but to add friction. Possible examples: • retail and return policy • anything requiring a reservation that can be resold or later cancelled for a refund • anything obtained by filling out a form • legal system including patents,…
People aren’t thinking of the downstream implications of personal AI agents If personal AI agents make it super easy to overcome high friction actions on the internet, the friction will just shift to another bottleneck downstream which may be even higher friction For example, if it becomes super easy to file insurance claims online and the insurance companies get overloaded and start losing money, they may stop taking claims online entirely and require in-person visits to resolve - which is an even worse scenario than now! Same for restaurant reservations. If you’re a hot restaurant whose reservations sell out immediately and then find AI agents are taking all of them, guess what, you’re going to force a different system entirely to stay fair. Anytime the equilibrium shifts between supply and demand, don’t expect the shift to be one-sided. There are multiple stakeholders here in the ecosystem
