It’s fair to say RFS are just hunches on what might be next, and conversation starters for people starting out. The main determiner of a startup idea’s success are the specific founders building specific tech for specific customers. The rest is categorization.
One question I've always been curious about: How much does @ycombinator shape the makeup of future batches with their Request for Startups? Similar to VC firms advertising what they want to fund, the practice has never made much sense to me. Surely you want founders to determine what needs to be built? Fortunately, YC does not appear to use their RFS as a factor in the application process; what they end up funding has no real relationship with the RFS.
