Chiikawa began as free comic strips an illustrator named Nagano posted to Twitter in January 2020. This summer, the first Chiikawa movie pulled ¥990 million on day one, the seventh biggest opening day in Japanese box office history. No publisher discovered her. Nagano built her audience the unglamorous way, selling LINE stickers in a marketplace where 3.9 million creators compete and fewer than 0.01% earn a living wage.
