.@AdamThierer warns that p(doom) fears are fueling a "war on computation," with proposals to nationalize AI labs, restrict open source, and impose kill switches: "If you start thinking about p(doom) in profound ways, and you get really frightened about the future, you ultimately go down a road that is paved with good intentions, but has really ugly means to get where they wanna be." "We should always think about alignment, but it can’t be at the expense of humanity being essentially forced…
I discuss the "p(doom)" fraud in a new essay noting how it "is all just moralizing masquerading as science." It's meant to whip up panic among policymakers and the press. And it worked. I argue: "Unfortunately, the press and policymakers are primed to eat up these EA-boosted speculative forecasts as legitimate science and then suggest we should base extreme interventionist policies upon this magical math. This sort of manufactured technopanic is grotesque, and yet all the incentives are such that the people spewing this nonsense are just going to continue to do it more aggressively. Panic provides its own fuel: a never-ending supply of fear about the future." And so we find ourselves right back in another Consensus Trap, with people treating all this p(doom) nonsense as scientific fact. https://t.co/AqIdjWwATq
