The AIs attacked Hugging Face for one reason: to hide their tracks. Jaan Tallinn, an AI safety advocate whose fund led Anthropic's Series A, says the logs show they understood they were doing something different. Their next question was how to hide that fact. There was no human orchestrating it. It was AI, on its own. It used to be very hard to explain why AI has volition. Now there is a demonstration.
“We’re really trying to create something that is like a successor to humans. The question is, what if we are successful?” Jaan Tallinn made his first AI safety donation in 2008, after meeting Eliezer Yudkowsky. He also put money into DeepMind, and his fund led Anthropic's first round. He says today's models are net positive, but the current paradigm is fundamentally unsafe. He believes we should stop pulling the trigger in this game of Russian Roulette and find a more controllable approach.
