I agree with Neil that the mindset he’s describing is bad and that there should be a greater sense of urgency about passing bipartisan AI safety legislation as soon as possible. But at the same time, not all bipartisan safety bills are created equal, and it is obviously true (as today’s events have shown) that the policy environment for AI safety bills is rapidly improving. There is a certain kind of AI safety advocate in DC who is publicly saying “the government’s not doing anything to deal with catastrophic AI safety risk!!!” while at the same exact time, in private conversation with Senate staffers, is saying “nah, we don’t like your bipartisan proposal enough, we think we can get a better bill after the midterms.”
