The deeper you are in the stack, the more amplification your errors have for every layer above. Every layer above you is assuming your API does what it says, always, under all conditions. When it doesn't, the failure propagates up through everything built on top in ways that are hard to trace and even harder to fix. This is why the closer you get to the bottom, the more careful you have to be.
