Open weight models have been part of the discourse for so long because they excite people. For a simple reason: the competition pressure keeps prices low. When something useful can run on many different computing platforms, you don't need anyone's permission to host it and nobody can keep prices high for long. Frontier models at their actual cost, adjusted for what it took to produce them, are a much less interesting story.
